What happened
- Palm Beach State College (PBSC) announced on Wednesday, October 21, 2026 that the first segment of Florida’s quantum-safe network is operational.
- The link joins PBSC with Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton over Palm Beach County’s dark fiber and uses IonQ quantum key distribution.
- It went live on October 15. It is funded by a US$1 million FloridaCommerce grant for defense infrastructure.
- Florida LambdaRail and Palm Beach County also take part.
Why it matters
- Quantum key distribution protects the exchange of encryption keys: any attempt to eavesdrop on the link disturbs the signals and is detected. It is a defense against anyone storing traffic today to decrypt it once quantum computers exist.
- The case shows a replicable recipe: public dark fiber, two educational institutions and a small grant. It does not start from a telecom operator.
- For academic and critical-infrastructure networks in Chile and the region, the lesson is about sequence: a first stretch trains staff and tests operation before buying a full network.
The number
US$1 million. FloridaCommerce grant funding the first stretch.
Context
The state initiative was announced in April 2026, when IonQ and Florida LambdaRail signed a master service agreement at the eMerge Americas conference in Miami. The first phase envisioned a secure corridor of nearly 100 miles, from Palm Beach to Miami-Dade. PBSC is building its future Quantum Innovation Center there.
What’s next
- Connections to Miami Dade College and FAU’s Jupiter campus are planned within three months.
- A larger expansion depends on new funding; the release sets no amounts or dates.
Bottom line
The risk that justifies these networks is already measured in software: NowSecure found no post-quantum code in 97% of 136,711 mobile apps. And quantum capacity is advancing in parallel: Bechtle will give a German aerospace center an IQM quantum cloud.
