What happened
- On September 24, Google published the September edition of Demand Gen, its periodic package of changes to demand campaigns.
- The centerpiece is Business Agent for YouTube ads: a conversational agent that lets people ask about a product inside the video and get an immediate answer from the uploaded catalog. Access is through a sign-up form, not direct activation.
- One-tap experiences are added: in Shorts, full-screen 9:16 image ads take people to the landing page with a single tap; in Gmail, the same on image ads.
- Affiliate location extensions come to Google Maps as promoted pins that appear while people navigate, search or move around.
Why it matters
- The figure Google chooses to highlight (40% more conversions when adding Gmail, at the same return) comes from internal data from February 2026. It’s Google’s own number, about its own inventory, measured seven months before the announcement. It works as a signal of direction, not as a projection of results.
- For anyone selling in Chile with an uploaded catalog, Business Agent changes where the purchase objection happens: it moves from your own site to the video player. Anything answered badly there is answered by a system reading the product listing, not by the sales team.
- There’s a consequence the announcement doesn’t mention: if the conversation happens inside the ad, the visit to your own site stops being the first measurable touchpoint. Attribution models that currently start at the click begin to lose the stretch where the decision is made.
The number
40% more conversions on image assets when adding Gmail to Demand Gen campaigns, at the same return on investment, according to Google internal data from February 2026.
Context
It’s the second move this year in the same direction. In August Google had brought Demand Gen to messaging apps, expanding inventory beyond search. Now it adds conversation inside the inventory it already had.
What’s next
- Business Agent: no date for general availability. Sign-up is by form.
- One-tap experiences and pins in Maps: no country-by-country rollout schedule in the announcement.
Bottom line
While Google installs conversational answers inside the ad, OpenAI is moving the opposite way with sponsored advertising inside answers. Both end up in the same place: a conversation where you can’t tell who paid to be there.
