What happened
- The Verge reported on August 29 that Google began automatically expanding some AI Overviews at the top of the results.
- In those cases, the AI-generated summary appears expanded, followed by a field to keep asking. Traditional web results sit further down.
- Google said automatic expansion is triggered when its systems estimate it will be especially useful, and that it can be turned off when the person has already started scrolling.
- The change deepens a transformation that was already under way: the results page stops being just an index of links and becomes a place where Google tries to resolve the query.
Why it matters
- For those who depend on organic traffic, position no longer necessarily equals visibility. A result can still be first among the links and yet appear after a generated answer, additional modules and a new conversational box.
- That forces a separation between two goals that were almost glued together for years: appearing on Google and getting the click. The first task now also includes becoming a source AI systems can interpret and cite.
- For media and content sites, the conflict is harsher. If the answer comes before the link, part of the informational value can be consumed without a visit. Google maintains that the total volume of clicks is holding; several publishers dispute that reading.
The number
1 organic position no longer means 1 visible block. The interface can insert a complete answer before the links.
Context
AI Overviews and AI Mode are moving search toward a conversational experience. In parallel, Google is developing ad formats designed for those same experiences. Generative search doesn’t just change how information is found: it also rearranges what space is left for media, brands and ads.
What’s next
- Google will keep testing when to expand these summaries automatically.
- SEO teams will have to measure impressions, clicks and presence in generative answers as related, but not identical, phenomena.
- Optimization will tend to reward content that’s easy to identify, verify and attribute: clear entities, original data, semantic structure and visible sources.
For years SEO asked how to reach the first result. The 2026 question is a bit more uncomfortable: what sits above that first result when you finally get there.
