NASA updates its lunar base rovers and sets flight hardware for late 2027

Astrolab and Lunar Outpost received task orders with no amounts, and Blue Origin will carry the vehicles to the lunar south pole. Delivery is set for 2028.

What happened

  • NASA published an update on October 20, 2026 about the rovers for its Moon Base, with a progress video and each contractor’s milestones.
  • Astrolab builds the crewed CLV-1 vehicle and the robotic FLIP rover. Lunar Outpost builds the crewed Pegasus vehicle. Both received task orders from NASA, with no published amounts.
  • Blue Origin received an order to deliver the vehicles to the lunar south pole through CLPS, the commercial delivery program.
  • FLIP will travel on Griffin Mission One, with launch planned for late 2026, aboard Voyager Technologies’ lander.

Why it matters

  • It is a full calendar for lunar mobility: Pegasus preliminary design review in October, CLV-1’s in late December, flight hardware in late 2027 and delivery in 2028.
  • For the Latin American space sector, the detail is the division of labor: NASA buys services from companies, it does not build. That structure opens room for suppliers of components, testing and software.
  • The consequence NASA does not stress: without public amounts on the orders, there is no way to compare the cost of the two crewed vehicles.

The number

6 km a day. Distance the crewed vehicles would cover per outing, with up to 10 km per battery charge and up to 80 kg of samples and tools.

Context

NASA adds that the VIPER rover, which looks for water in permanently shadowed craters, will fly in 2027 on the Blue Moon Mark 1 lander and travel more than 30 km. There temperatures drop as low as -203 °C. A second MAPP rover from Lunar Outpost is planned for early 2027. On the computing side, see Google and its TPU in orbit and Monarch’s gravity sensor for NASA.

What’s next

  • October 2026: Pegasus preliminary design review.
  • Late December 2026: CLV-1 preliminary design review.
  • Late 2026: Griffin Mission One launch with FLIP.
  • 2027: VIPER; flight hardware by year-end. 2028: delivery at the south pole.

Bottom line

The Moon base is built as a chain of dated contracts. Today’s dates are design reviews; flight dates come later.
